World Ocean Day- Beat Plastic Pollution

World Ocean Day 9th June, beach clean up by staff of MEECC including the Minister of Environment Minister Wallace Cosgrow, the Ocean Project, SPDF, Au Cap environment group, Eco-warriors and volunteers. As this year’s theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution” the Ocean Project and other NGO’s has been creating awareness every year to showcase the danger of pollution in coastal areas. There was much rubbish collected especially plastic cups, pet bottles as well as glass bottles. One of the Eco-warrior team member Ms. Alvania Lawren made a small opening speech advising the media and the public present about the danger of plastic in the ocean. She stated that plastic can be easily mistaken as a jelly fish and it can be consumed by different sea creatures especially the famous Sea turtles. The plastic in their digestive system does not disintegrate and that may cause death to those Sea Turtles.

The Ocean Project team organizes beach clean up every month in different coastal areas on the island, the rubbish they collect are recorded in their data base. Those coming on the beach today and tomorrow, please keep it clean. Thank you all for coming.
