A Memorandum of
Understanding was signed this morning between the Seychelles
Civil Aviation Authority,
Seychelles Energy Commission (SEC) and the Ministry of
Environment, Energy and Climate Change.
The signing of the MoU is to solidify the
commitment of all parties towards a project which includes the installation and
education on the use of energy efficient lighting at the Seychelles
International Airport.
The airport concourse and bus staging area
are to be used as demonstration sites to promote the benefits of energy
efficient lighting. The demo is supported by the GOS-UNDP-GEF Resource
Efficiency Seychelles. This MoU will allow for the reduction of 3297 kg CO2
per year with a potential of savings of 69% with proper management of the
system SCAA’s existing energy efficiency strategy dubbed the ‘’Eco Leap’’
makes them the ideal partner for a demo, the adoption of energy efficiency
lights aims to reduce SIA’s carbon footprint by 33%.
The retrofitting of the
lights to energy efficient ones is expected to decrease utilities cost by SCR
264,114 per year, and it contributes to the overall passengers and public
experience at the airport. An ROI of 2,91 is expected per year with a total
savings of SCR 654,450 over a 10 year period.
The MoU will be supported by a communication campaign targeting school
children, post secondary & business community to learn the benefits of adopting
such greener actions.
